Inexpensive, delicious, honest, real wine — that is how we have described CVNE before, and Vina Real Reserva is the bottle that makes the case. Vina Real is CVNE's Rioja Alavesa arm, drawing mostly from Laguardia and Elciego on the south-facing slopes that run down from the Sierra de Cantabria to the Ebro, where the soils are chalky and the vines are more than thirty years old. The blend is around 90% Tempranillo with Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo filling out the rest, and it gets roughly two years in a mix of French and American oak followed by further time in bottle at the winery before release. Rioja's control board rated 2019 Excellent, and the wines have the concentration and balance to justify it. Classically styled Reserva: savory, sweet-spiced, drinking well now with room to keep.

"The 2019 Viña Real Reserva was cropped from a healthy year that delivered a ripe wine without excess and 14% alcohol while keeping the freshness and balance. It matured in barrel for 18 months. The nose is very 2019, with notes of damp earth and leather, powerful but with elegance and balance. The vintages are quite marked in this classical Viña Real range, which consists of this Reserva, the Crianza and the Gran Reserva. 180,000 bottles produced. Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied, with red cherry, dried fig, vanilla and sweet baking spice from the oak. Supple tannins, fresh acidity, savory finish.
