Maya is Dalla Valle's flagship, a nearly even blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc off the best block on the estate, named for Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle's daughter, born in 1987. The vineyard is 21 acres on a rocky volcanic plateau in Oakville just east of the Silverado Trail, where iron-rich red soils and yields around a ton and a half per acre concentrate the fruit; by 1998 Tony Soter and Mia Klein were making the wine. 1998 was the El Nino year: a wet spring gave poor fruit set, ripening was uneven, and harvest ran late into October and early November, but the small, loose clusters that survived had very little juice relative to skin, which is where the concentration in the better wines came from. The result is a leaner, more perfumed Maya than the great warm years, and this private-cellar bottle is fully mature. Drink it now, and give it some air.

Antonio Galloni

"One of the biggest revelations in this tasting, the 1998 Maya is drop-dead gorgeous. Expressive aromatics lift from the glass, followed by small red berries, pine, menthol and leather. The 1998 is all about detail. What a wonderful surprise the 1998 Maya has turned out to be. There is also little doubt the 1998, from a poorly regarded vintage, has handled time with far more grace than the 1997." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

95 points

"The 1998 Maya (500 cases from a blend of 45% Cabernet Franc and 55% Cabernet Sauvignon) is an amazing effort, possessing multiple layers of fruit, sweet tannin, and no herbaceousness, astringency, or thinness. This is an amazing tour de force in winemaking for the vintage. It is loaded, with impeccable balance." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Wine Spectator

"Dark, ripe, rich and intense, with a complex and persistent beam of black cherry, blackberry, currant, anise and sage, turning floral, picking up hints of plum and chocolate. Firmly tannic..."
