Maya is Dalla Valle's flagship, a nearly even blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc off the best block on the estate, and 1992 is one of the vintages that turned it into a Napa cult wine. Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle planted their 21 acres on a rocky volcanic plateau in Oakville, just east of the Silverado Trail, where iron-rich red soils and yields held to around a ton and a half per acre give the wine its density; the cuvee is named for their daughter Maya, born in 1987, and Heidi Barrett made the wine through these early years. 1992 started cool and uneven at flowering, then turned warm and dry, with a frantic August start to harvest before cooler nights and morning fog let the Cabernet finish at its own pace. This bottle comes from a private cellar, and at more than three decades it is fully mature. Open it for dinner rather than putting it back down.
