A tiny Gevrey-Chambertin grower makes a Bourgogne Rouge with none of the shortcuts the category usually allows. Denis Bachelet has worked the family domaine all his life (his first vintage was 1982), and his farming is exacting: very low yields, every grape checked, and wines of striking purity whatever the appellation on the label. This one comes from just 0.6 hectares of Pinot Noir in two lieux-dits, Pressonier and Grand Champs, on limestone and clay facing southeast, with vines planted in 1977 and 1986. In the cellar it gets the house treatment: fully destemmed, native-yeast fermentation, and bottled by hand without fining or filtration. The result is Pinot fruit with nothing covering it up, which is exactly why a basic Bourgogne from this cellar is worth your attention. It's the easiest way into one of the Côte de Nuits' most quietly respected domaines, and 2017 has had a few years in bottle to settle down.

"A pretty and very fresh nose speaks of black raspberry and forest floor aromas that are trimmed in subtle oak nuances. There is both excellent intensity and detail to the delicious middle weight flavors that offer especially good depth and persistence for the genre. This is easily of villages level quality." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

"The 2018 Bourgogne Rouge has a very intense bouquet with black cherry and boysenberry scented bouquet. The palate is well defined with intense black cherry and citrus fruit, veins of orange rind and quite a firm finish. You could actually cellar this for two or three years." —Neal Martin

More about Denis Bachelet

Modest - even humble - Denis Bachelet has been working at the family domaine all his life - his first vintage was in 1982. The farming is meticulous, the vines are ancient and the yields are very low. Every single grape is scrutinized. They have striking purity regardless of appellation. All Bachelet wine can age for a decade or more. I had a 1995 Charmes Chambertin last year that was just coming into its own.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with thyme and garlic; duck breast with a cherry sauce; mushroom risotto or wild mushroom tart; coq au vin; a charcuterie board with jambon persillé and a young Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the pure, red-fruited style of a well-made Côte de Nuits Bourgogne: cherry and raspberry with a touch of earthy, floral spice. Fully destemmed and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it typically shows a light-to-medium body, bright acidity and fine, silky tannins, finishing dry, fresh and clean. Think of it as a lighter, simpler cousin of Gevrey-Chambertin.
