Classic earthy red Burgundy from the Côte de Nuits at a decidedly un-Burgundian price, and 2020 has now had six years to settle into itself. Côte de Nuits-Villages is the appellation covering the two ends of the Côte de Nuits, Corgoloin among them: the same slope and the same shallow brown limestone as the famous communes, on land that simply never got a village name of its own — which is the whole reason wines like this over-deliver. Didier Fornerol ran the vineyards and cellar at Domaine de l'Arlot for sixteen years under Jean-Pierre de Smet before taking over his family's six hectares here in 1999, and he ferments with whole clusters, an aromatic boost that makes the wine a touch softer and more accessible, then ages it in used barrels. 2020 was hot and dry with an exceptionally early harvest and small, thick-skinned berries, giving a darker and more concentrated Fornerol than usual with the vintage's surprising freshness running underneath. It also comes in magnum, the format to choose if you want a slower aging curve or a bottle that can hold a long table. Drinking well now and good for another five years or so.
