The bottle that made Fornerol a cult name among Burgundy hunters: classic earthy Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir at a decidedly un-Burgundian price. Côte de Nuits-Villages is the appellation for the far ends of the Côte de Nuits, including Corgoloin, where Fornerol farms six hectares — same slope, same shallow brown limestone as the celebrated communes up the road, minus a village name of its own. Didier Fornerol spent sixteen years as vineyard manager and cellar master at Domaine de l'Arlot under Jean-Pierre de Smet before taking over the family estate in 1999, and he vinifies with whole clusters, which adds aromatic lift and makes the wine a touch softer and more approachable, then ages it in used barrels. 2023 was a warm, sunny, generous-crop year in Burgundy that produced ripe, juicy, open-hearted reds, and this is exactly that: a red Burgundy you can pull the cork on tonight. Drink it now through the next four or five years.
