Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from two of the people who did most to define it, made deliberately quieter. Ivan Sutherland and James Healy met at Cloudy Bay, Sutherland in the vineyards and Healy in the cellar, and struck out on their own in 2004 with Dog Point, on land Sutherland had first planted in the late 1970s where the Brancott and Omaka valleys meet. It is now the largest certified organic vineyard in New Zealand, and every grape is hand-picked at yields of around 50 hl/ha - genuinely unusual in Marlborough - then whole-cluster pressed and fermented in stainless steel. What comes out is recognizably Marlborough but more textural and less shouty: citrus, herb and salt in place of the passionfruit blast. The name, incidentally, comes from the settler-era sheepdogs that went feral in these hills and turned on the flocks they were meant to guard.

"Like a blinkered horse, the 2025 Sauvignon Blanc moves in a straight line with purpose. While the nose is a little tight with a reductive scent of struck match, the palate reveals elderflower, green capsicum, lemon and lime. A decant would really help this if you're planning to drink it in its youth, as it's currently in an edgy straitjacket of infancy. Dry and firm, the 2025 needs another 6-12 months in bottle to soften its angles. The finish fades a little quickly." —Rebecca Gibb MW
