A magnum of Romanee-Saint-Vivant with three decades in the cellar - grand cru Vosne from the band of hillside directly below Romanee-Conti and Richebourg. The bottle predates the name on the label: in 1995 this was still Domaine Robert Arnoux, with Pascal Lachaux - Robert's son-in-law, and a homeopathic pharmacist before he was a winemaker - taking charge of the cellar that very year, after Robert Arnoux died in February, long before his son Charles turned the domaine into one of Burgundy's most chased addresses. Their parcel lies at the lower end of the appellation, alongside La Grande Rue. 1995 was a small, firmly structured vintage with the tannin and acidity to demand decades of patience, and the magnum format slows everything further, so this should be arriving at its peak rather than sliding past it. Sourced from a private cellar; decant it gently and pour it into the biggest glasses you own.

"A half-shade lighter than the Suchots. Deeper, sappier aromas of black fruits, oak spice, cocoa and minerals. Wonderfully concentrated and thick in the mouth; boasts fabulous sweetness and a vibrant core of spicy fruit. Really amazing material here. Again, the extraordinary finishing fruit makes the tannins virtually disappear." —Stephen Tanzer
