A southern Rhône with twelve years on it — already a rare bird, and almost unheard of at this address. Domaine Boisson has farmed Cairanne for six generations; Bruno took the reins in 2002, expanding to 28 hectares of clay-limestone hillside. L'Exigence is their top cuvée — the parcel selection saved for the vintages that demand it. The 2013 was a cool, late-ripening year that's aged beautifully: Grenache-led, with garnet edges and a nose of dried cherries, garrigue, sweet leather, bay leaf, and that candied-orange note Cairanne does so well. Cairanne was promoted from Côtes du Rhône Villages to its own cru AOC in 2016 — three years after this wine was bottled. Drink it now for a glimpse of mature southern Rhône at a price that no longer exists.

"The top white of the estate is the 2013 Cairanne l’Exigence Blanc, and while it offers more richness and depth over the classic cuvee, it lags recent vintages in terms of quality. A blend of 40% Roussanne, 35% Grenache Blanc, 20% Clairette and 5% Bourboulenc, it’s vinified and aged half in stainless steel and half in barrel (15% new), with a small percentage going through malolactic fermentation. Exhibiting lots of floral, lemon curd and tropical aromas and flavors, it’s medium-bodied, juicy, fresh and straightforward on the palate, without the normal depth this cuvee normally carries. It’s ideal for drinking over the coming year or so." —Jeb Dunnuck

Tasting Profile

Mature and savory. Dried cherry, fig, garrigue, sweet leather, bay leaf, candied orange peel, and a dusting of sweet spice. Tannins fully resolved; finish long, warm, and Mediterranean.
