Cru Beaujolais with a natural-wine soul. Domaine Chamonard farms in Morgon, and since founder Joseph Chamonard's passing the estate has been run by his daughter Genevieve and son-in-law Jean-Claude Chanudet, one of the original figures of the natural movement. Le Clos de Lys is hand-harvested Gamay, fermented partly carbonic with native yeasts, aged in old foudres and bottled unfiltered with little or no added sulfur. The 2013 has a decade-plus on it now and should be drinking in a mellow, savory place. A serious, age-worthy Morgon for fans of low-intervention Beaujolais.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"Deep ruby. Aromas of ripe red berries, pungent flowers and licorice, along with a smoky mineral element that emerges with air. Sappy, concentrated and penetrating, offering alluringly sweet red berry compote, violet pastille and spicecake flavors and a touch of succulent herbs. Impressively complex, with no excess fat. Harmonious tannins accompany the very long, floral-driven finish." —Josh Raynolds

More about Domaine Chamonard

One of the original natural wine pioneers in Beaujolais, Jean-Claude Chanudet took over the 18th-century estate in 1989 and transformed it. He's the "enfant terrible" of the region, working small patches of Morgon and legendary Fleurie vines on an outcrop called La Madone. These wines taste like they were made by someone who trusted his vines more than anyone else's opinions.

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken, charcuterie, mushroom dishes, lentils, or a simple steak frites.

Tasting Profile

Medium-bodied and earthy with mature red fruit, bright acidity and soft tannins. Savory rather than fruity at this age.
