Domaine Chapel is one of the most exciting names in Beaujolais today. Founded by David and Michele Chapel, who traded Michelin-starred restaurants for old-vine Gamay, the domaine has quickly gained a reputation for producing beautifully delicate, terroir-driven wines. Their Chiroubles comes from some of the highest-altitude vineyards in Beaujolais, where granite soils and cool nights create wines of freshness and finesse. The 2022 vintage, shaped by a warm but balanced growing season, is especially vibrant, capturing the lively charm of this cru.

Juicy raspberry, wild strawberry, and crushed violets jump from the glass, underscored by subtle spice and wet stone minerality. The palate is silky and energetic, with bright acidity carrying the wine through a long, elegant finish. Compared to denser, more structured crus like Morgon or Moulin-à-Vent, this Chiroubles leans into lightness and finesse, making it effortlessly drinkable while still offering depth.

Best served slightly chilled, it’s a perfect match for roast chicken, charcuterie, or even a simple weeknight meal. While delicious now for its youthful vibrancy, it will continue to gain complexity over the next few years. A true bistro-style Beaujolais with serious pedigree.

The story of Domaine Chapel exemplifies the promise of Beaujolais, one of the few regions where aspiring winemakers can afford access to great terroir, and a place where it’s possible to receive help and guidance from its most venerated names.

For Domaine Chapel, founded by David Chapel and Michele Smith-Chapel, this assistance and guidance came from both Lapierre and Métras, two giants of both natural wine and Beaujolais. It was while working for Lapierre in 2013 that David met Michele. It was not so long before they married and relocated to Beaujolais, making their first wine, a 2016 Julienas, with the help (and facilities) of Lapierre siblings Mathieu and Camille.

The Chapels subsequently acquired their own winery and more vines, including a parcel of Fleurie vineyard Charbonnières, a great terroir somewhat famous because it’s also farmed by the legendary Yvon Métras.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 90
"The Chiroubles cuvée reflects the team's unwavering dedication to the steep, sandy soils of the region. The 2022 Chiroubles unfolds with lush aromas of bramble fruits, tangy raspberries, cherries, hibiscus, Indian spices and dried herbs. While more introspective on the palate than on the nose, it possesses a stealthy demeanor, displaying concentration and agility with an energetic presence. Medium-bodied, it is buoyed by ripe acidity and fine-grained tannins that gently tease the cheeks, tied together with notes of spice and cracked peppercorns that lend additional piquancy."
