This is grand cru Burgundy from a domaine that spent generations quietly selling its grapes before bottling on its own, which is exactly why the fruit here punches so far above the estate's low profile. The parcel sits in Mazoyeres-Chambertin, planted back in the late 1960s, and legally sold as Charmes-Chambertin. Expect the darker, broodier, more structured side of Gevrey rather than the airy prettiness of a lighter village wine. The 2017 vintage is generous and classically proportioned, ripe but fresh, with fine-grained tannins and real length. Serious cellar material from genuinely old vines, at grand cru heights.

"The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from Mazoyères, where their parcel is populated by vines planted in 1968 and 1969. The broody bouquet does not disguise that it is Mazoyères, not Charmes, the fruit profile darker than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with good grip, a fine bead of acidity and a sinewy style. Don’t be afraid to afford this four to five years in bottle. Very fine." —Neal Martin
