This is the flagship, the wine the Sabon family built its reputation on, and it earns every bit of the reverence. Domaine de la Janasse draws the Vieilles Vignes from century-old, Grenache-dominated vines across four complementary terroirs of Chateauneuf-du-Pape: rounded galets for power, sand for freshness, red clay for structure, and limestone for finesse. Blend those together from ancient vines and you get a Chateauneuf of remarkable depth and layering. The hot, dry 2017 vintage produced small, thick-skinned berries and powerful, structured reds built for the cellar. Big, concentrated, and ageworthy, this is Southern Rhone at the very top of its game.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"Saturated ruby. Displays intensely perfumed, spice-accented black and blue fruit, floral oil and candied licorice qualities on the nose. Offers powerful cherry liqueur, black raspberry, fruitcake and exotic spice flavors that tighten up through the back half. There's surprising energy here given the wine's volume. Velvety tannins frame a strikingly long, spicy finish that strongly echoes the cherry and floral notes." —Josh Raynolds

Robert Parker

"The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes derives from parcels planted on classic clay and galets roulés soils. It's 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% other varieties. Tight, intense, even clenched, it's in need of several years' cellaring before it becomes truly enjoyable to drink. For now, those gorgeous black cherries are restrained behind a firm wall of tannins. Full-bodied and rich, this is ripe, it just requires patience." —Joe Czerwinski

Decanter

"Fermented in concrete and matured for 12 months in foudre and demi-muid, this wine has an inky colour with gentle notes of clove and nutmeg oak over mulled damson fruit. It's not as full or heavy as expected, but is still powerful and quite extracted. The fine tannins are generous and grippy. Remarkably well balanced for its size."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"Ripe and fresh, with an engaging beam of cassis, dark plum and boysenberry puree flavors, supported by light anise, graphite and sweet tobacco notes. Shows good juicy energy and a seriously long finish. Drink now through 2035."

Wine Enthusiast

98 points

"Compared to this producer's sunny Chaupin, shades of earth and fiery spice lend a sultry flair to this heart-stopping Grenache-blend (augmented by small proportions of Syrah, Mourvèdre and others). Flavors of cassis and boysenberry are profoundly ripe but nuanced by hints of smoky tea leaf, black pepper and graphite. Silky, feather-tipped tannins make it delightful already, but it's a powerhouse that should improve for decades."
