This is the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine de la Mordorée makes for the cellar, and a 2010 lets you drink it the way it was built to be drunk: with real age on it. Reine des Bois is the domaine's top bottling. Its sister, La Dame Voyageuse, is the one made for drinking young. The fruit comes from the family's parcels on the Plateau de la Crau, the part of the appellation famous for its layer of rolled cobblestones over siliceous clay. This vintage comes from the Christophe Delorme era. He's the man who built the domaine's reputation, and after his death in 2015 his wife Madeleine and daughter Ambre took over with the same team. A bit of trivia for the table: "La Mordorée" is a poetic nickname for the woodcock, a bird the family loves, and Reine des Bois means "Queen of the Woods." If you want a mature Châteauneuf but never cellared one yourself, this bottle saves you the wait.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast leg of lamb with garlic and rosemary; Provençal beef daube; roasted woodcock, pheasant or other game birds; wild mushroom ragout over polenta; a cheese board with aged Comté and Tomme.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape profile from the stony Plateau de la Crau: ripe dark cherry and plum, wild dried herbs, black pepper and a hint of licorice. Full-bodied and warm, with firm but ripe tannins and enough freshness to carry it. As a cuvée built to age, it typically moves with time toward leather, dried fruit and earthy, savoury notes on a long finish.
