This is the same monopole as the Clos des 60 Ouvrees, the walled vineyard owned entirely by Pousse d'Or inside Volnay's premier cru En Caillerets, here from the 2008 vintage. One of the estate's flagship sites, run since 1997 by Patrick Landanger after the celebrated Potel years. The 2008 is a fresh, classically proportioned vintage built on acidity and red-fruited lift rather than power, and at around 18 years it should be in a graceful mature window now with room to hold. Pinot Noir, premier cru. Decant a mature Burgundy and let it open.

"Ripe plum and cherry, mushroom stock, cedar, and brown spices mark the nose of Landanger’s 2008 Volnay Caillerets Clos des 60 Ouvrees, which conveys an energy reminiscent of – but going beyond – that exhibited by the 2006. At the same time, there is a dark chocolate richness accompanying the persistent sweetness of fruit, with cherry pit, chalk, fruit skin chew offering a slightly austere counterpoint in its lingering finish. This should be a 12-15 year keeper, and hopefully grow in stature with time." —David Schildknecht
