This is the top of the Côte de Nuits, full stop — Bonnes Mares is one of Burgundy's great grand crus, and Domaine de la Vougeraie farms a coveted parcel of it biodynamically (organic from its 1999 founding, with biodynamics begun in 2001, on the leading edge of the movement). The vines run from over a century old to younger plantings, on an east-facing slice partly sheltered by an old quarry's rock, which gives the wine its trademark mix of muscle and grace. Bonnes Mares is the burliest of the Chambolle-area grand crus, and 2006 is now a fully mature vintage — this is drinking in its sweet spot, with the savory, secondary character that only time gives Pinot Noir. Decant it, give it a proper glass, and treat it like the occasion bottle it is. If you have more, they'll hold.

"Here there is more aromatic depth with a more forthcoming if not actually expressive nose featuring both ripe blue and red pinot fruit, wood spice, stone and touches of underbrush and warm earth that merge into full, rich, intense and as one would expect, distinctly powerful flavors that possess plenty of dry extract that renders the firm tannins almost invisible though I suspect they will make themselves felt going forward as this will also need upwards of a decade to fully resolve. A balanced and serious Bonnes Mares that is worth consideration."
