Here's what patience buys you. Domaine de Marcoux, run by the Armenier sisters, was an early adopter of biodynamic practices in the southern Rhone (certified organic since 1991; biodynamic in practice, not Demeter-certified) and has long been one of the appellation's benchmark estates, farming organically since 1991. Their Vieilles Vignes comes from the oldest Grenache vines on the property, and the classically styled 2004 has now had two decades to unwind. The primary fruit has given way to black truffle, cherry, and Provencal herbs, the tannins have gone soft and silky, and the whole thing drinks with mineral, mature grace. This is ready right now, with enough backbone to hold for years more.

Antonio Galloni

"Dark red. Incredibly fragrant nose offers intense scents of raspberry, blackberry and kirsch underscored by a vibrant mineral tone. Lush, creamy and very sweet, with strong red and dark fruit flavors, exotic spice accents and a smooth, velour-like texture. Whatever tannins this might have are completely absorbed by the deep, concentrated fruit. Finishes very sweet, with exceptional length and bright mineral lift." —Josh Raynolds

"I still consider the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes from the Armenier Sisters one of the wines of the vintage, and it's rare to find another wine with this much texture and richness. As normal, it's slightly darker in color than the traditional cuvee and offers beautiful sweetness in its red and black fruits, garrigue, olive tapenade and spice aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, still fresh, concentrated and elegant, it's drinking at point but will keep nicely through 2024." —Jeb Dunnuck

"Very round and supple up front, with raspberry and fig fruit caressed by silky tannins. Long finish shows kirsch, mineral, graphite and dark chocolate hints. Really stretches out, with the structure becoming more evident as it tightens up in the glass. Needs cellaring to let it put on all its weight."
