We have been betting on Jean-François Malsert to join the Gonon, Souhaut and Dard et Ribo tier of Saint-Joseph growers, and this is one of the two parcel wines that makes the case. Les Sabots de Coppi comes off southeast-facing terraces of granite and mica-schist at Sécheras, above the Iserand gorge, from vines his grandfather tended for decades without chemical treatment while selling the fruit to négociants rather than making wine himself. Jef ran a natural wine bar in Tournon-sur-Rhône before taking the vines on in 2011; he now works with cover crops and grazing animals, ferments with native yeasts on a mix of whole clusters and destemmed fruit, and ages in neutral demi-muids and amphora with almost no sulfur. 2024 was one of the wettest years on record in the Rhône, with mildew pressure that gutted yields, but the Syrahs that came through are fragrant, fresh and unusually approachable young. Open one now; there is no need to wait, though it has the frame to keep.

Jean-François Malsert was a devoted wine bar owner before founding Domaine de l'Iserand in 2011 on his grandfather's vineyard in the Northern Rhône. Four hectares of Syrah on granite and mica-schist, farmed organically, fermented whole-cluster, aged in amphorae and demi-muids. His VdF Syrah at around $20 offers great Northern Rhône terroir at a price that makes sense.

Tasting Profile

Aromatic and juicy: black cherry, blueberry, crushed black pepper and a wisp of smoke. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins, bright acidity and a granite-driven mineral finish.
