The easiest way into one of the Northern Rhône's most exciting young addresses. Viola comes from old terraced vines, thirty to forty-five years old, on the granite and mica-schist hillsides just above the Saint-Joseph boundary, which is why it carries a Vin de France label rather than the appellation. Jef Malsert ran a natural wine bar in Tournon-sur-Rhône before taking over his grandfather's never-sprayed vines at Sécheras in 2011; he ferments with native yeasts and a good share of whole clusters, then raises the wine in tank and neutral wood with minimal sulfur. 2024 soaked the region and slashed yields, but it also produced Syrahs that are fragrant and light on their feet. Juicy, peppery and mineral, with a little chill it becomes a house red.

Jean-François Malsert was a devoted wine bar owner before founding Domaine de l'Iserand in 2011 on his grandfather's vineyard in the Northern Rhône. Four hectares of Syrah on granite and mica-schist, farmed organically, fermented whole-cluster, aged in amphorae and demi-muids. His VdF Syrah at around $20 offers great Northern Rhône terroir at a price that makes sense.
