The coolest and highest-lying of Faiveley's Gevrey Premier Crus, now sixteen years into a vintage that was built to age. La Combe aux Moines sits just north of Les Cazetiers, further up the slope and facing east on fossil-rich clay and white marl, an aspect that gives the wine a lift and freshness the warmer Gevrey sites can't match. Faiveley spent the 21st century converting itself from a classic Burgundy negociant into a true domaine that grows the vast majority of its own fruit, and 2010 catches the house at its best: December frost and a poor flowering slashed the crop, small thick-skinned berries and a cool summer preserved acidity, and the wines came out structured and transparent rather than heavy. Aged sixteen months in French oak, a little under half of it new. This is a back-vintage bottle from a private cellar, mature and drinking beautifully with plenty held in reserve -- decant it and give it an hour.

"Similar to the nose of the Combe d'Orveau, this is gorgeously complex though the components of it are notably different as here there is more emphasis on earth and a sauvage character to the exceptionally fresh and airy yet deeply pitched aromas. The rich, intense and palate saturating flavors possess excellent volume yet fine detail as well as a driving minerality that is buffered by an abundance of dry extract that imparts a seductive character to the hugely long finish. This is a classic Combe Aux Moines that is perhaps slightly less youthfully austere than usual at this early stage. In a word, terrific." —Allen Meadows
