Clos des Ducs belongs to the d'Angerville family and nobody else — a walled monopole climbing the slope directly behind the village of Volnay, and the estate's calling card. The domaine has been a reference point for precisely made Volnay for generations, and has farmed biodynamically since converting in 2006, and this is the site that gives its most structured, most serious wine: firmer and more upright than the perfumed charm Volnay is usually known for. Fifteen years on, the 2011 has arrived where it was always headed. The fruit has shifted from red and primary toward something deeper and more savory, the tannins have unwound, and the underlying tension is now the point rather than the obstacle. It remains Pinot Noir on the lighter, finer side of the scale — all detail and lift rather than muscle. Pour it now and don't overthink the decant.
