"Foot-cutter"—named for the sharp-edged pebbles that quickly wore out workers' shoes. From the top of Volnay's hillside on steep southeast-facing slopes, Taillepieds is considered more complete and powerful than neighboring Champans or Caillerets. The thin, poor, whitish soil with limestone, clay, and sharp pebbles produces wines of exceptional finesse and racy character. The domaine holds 1.07 hectares of this climat. Deep brambly notes with fresh saline finish, built for aging.

"Coming from a vineyard that is one-third uprooted at the moment, the 2023 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru dials up the marine element on the nose: hints of seaweed and oyster shell percolate through dark berry fruit as a subtle pencil box note gradually emerges. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, nicely judged acidity and gentle grip on the finish.
