Lanzarote in the Canary Islands is a brutally hard place to farm even in the best years. A volcanic island off the coast of Morocco where farmers protect their vines from the fierce trade winds and help the roots reach the fertile soil by digging holes in the volcanic ash and ring them with a low wall of protective stones.
But 2025 was particularly rough on the farmers. Irregular bud break and unpredictable weather meant only 112,000 kgs of Listán Negro were harvested – a tiny fraction of a normal year. The silver lining is that the fruit Ignacio Valdera at Bermejos managed to harvest was amazing: small, intensely flavored berries that made an absolutely delicious wine. It’s a glorious example of why we fell in love with the wine in the first place, savory, salty, and smoky but also threaded with intense fruit.
We always buy as much Bermejos as we can, and it’s never enough to last the summer. This year will be worse than ever. So please don’t wait to email now to grab your bottles. We’ve got a special 6-bottle price so that the Bermejos fanatics can load up!
Bodegas Los Bermejos, Rosé of Listán Negro, 2025 $33.99
The volcanic freshness that makes it so mouthwateringly delicious also creates impressive longevity: this is a rosado that happily picks up mineral-led complexity and elegant caramelized-papaya notes over a few years in bottle. But we’d never ask you to show such restraint.
