The most approachable way into one of Burgundy's most revered estates. Domaine Marquis d'Angerville pioneered estate bottling in Volnay — Sem d'Angerville broke with the négociants' blending practices and started bottling his own wine in the 1920s — and the family still farms its proprietary Pinot d'Angerville selection biodynamically. The village Volnay comes from two parcels that border the premier crus, Les Pluchots and Les Grands Champs, and is raised without new oak so the domaine's signature silk and perfume arrive unpainted. It's the first rung of a ladder that climbs through the domaine's premier cru blend to named sites like Champans and, at the top, the walled monopole Clos des Ducs — and it's made with the same exacting hand. 2010 was a classic, balanced vintage, and at sixteen years this back-vintage bottle is drinking beautifully now.
