This is mature Grand Cru Burgundy from a Vosne-Romanee legend at the height of a celebrated vintage. Clos de Vougeot is the great walled Grand Cru of the Cote de Nuits, a 50-hectare patchwork shared by many growers, and Robert Arnoux farmed a parcel here for Pinot Noir of real depth. The 1996 vintage is famous for its firm structure and bracing acidity, which is exactly what has carried wines like this into graceful old age. At nearly three decades old this is fully resolved and fragile, so handle the bottle gently, decant off any sediment, and drink it soon. A collector's bottle for a special table.

Antonio Galloni

89 points

"Good fresh medium red. Cherry, licorice, tobacco and herbs on the expressive nose. Rather withdrawn in the mouth, but sound acidity and firm tannic spine give it verve. Finishes fairly lively and long. Needs time." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

92 points

"Produced from a parcel located to the left of the chateau, near the entrance to the Grands Echezeaux vineyard, this dark ruby-colored wine reveals a nose reminiscent of roasted spices and cafe au lait. This soft, supple, medium-to-full-bodied, and silky-textured wine is seductive and filled with complex blackberry, cassis, coffee, mocha, and spice flavors. Its long finish is firmer than the Suchots yet should easily melt into this offering's glorious fruit." —Pierre Rovani
