Domenico Clerico was one of the original Barolo Boys, the 1990s modernist crew who put French barrique and shorter macerations into the Langhe playbook. Pajana is one of his flagships, a single-vineyard Barolo from inside the Ginestra MGA in Monforte d'Alba, planted in 1971 on Lequio-Serravallian marl, debut vintage 1990. The 2006 sits squarely in the modernist Clerico mold, vinified by Domenico himself nearly two decades ago: French barrique, polished tannin, exotic spice. Domenico passed in 2017, and the estate continues under Oscar Arrivabene, Domenico's longtime protégé and right-hand man and the team he trained, with a recent move toward larger oak and longer macerations. This 2006 is a snapshot of the original style at peak maturity, drinking beautifully right now.

"The 2006 Barolo Pajana reveals incredible aromatic complexity and intensity, something this particular site isn't always capable of. There is lovely definition to be found as this classic feeling, mid-weight Pajana opens up in the glass. Layers of ripe dark fruit, spices, flowers, licorice and minerals develop seamlessly through to the close. I am floored by the wine's volume, depth and length. Quite simply, this is a magnificent effort from Clerico." —Antonio Galloni

Wine Spectator

"A rough and tumble red, full of cherry, floral, strawberry, menthol and spice flavors. The tannins are assertive, dominating the finish, but this shows persistence and a long, mineral aftertaste."

More about Domenico Clerico

Since 1976, Domenico Clerico has been pulling Barolo from the steep slopes around Monforte d'Alba in Piedmont. His four legendary crus—Ginestra, Bussia, Pajana, Mosconi—sit on limestone soils that demand time and respect. At 21 hectares producing 110,000 bottles yearly, Clerico remains one of Piedmont's most respected voices. These are elegant Barolos, the way serious collectors understand them—structured, age-worthy, built to last decades.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, osso buco, truffled risotto, or roast game birds. The richer, more polished modernist style stands up to luxurious wintery dishes and aged hard cheeses like Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Mature Nebbiolo notes of dried cherry, rose, tar, leather, cocoa, and a flicker of cedar-spice from the barrique. The palate is plush and resolved, tannins fully integrated, with the classic Monforte structure underneath. Drinking at peak through the late 2020s.
