If you love Riesling, you know the name Dönnhoff. If you don't love Riesling-- yet-- Dönnhoff will teach you why the grape inspires such passion. Dönnhoff is the greatest estate in the Nahe and one of the best in all of Germany. The family has had four generations to dive deep into their terroir and perfect their winemaking. Their top wines are long-lived and collectible. That terroir is, of course, key. The Nahe has the most varied soils (including, especially, different kinds of volcanic soil) of any German region, as well as a climate that ranges from very cold high-elevation sites to pockets of Mediterranean warmth. This gives Dönnhoff a painter’s palette of flavors and textures from which to craft a perfect wine.

Antonio Galloni

"Picking for this wine extended a bit farther into October than it did for the corresponding Brücke, and a bit more of what was gathered was botrytized. Despite that, ripe white peach and lime on the nose seem to promise a fresher, brighter palate impression than that conveyed by the Brücke Auslese, this is in fact just what ensues. Billowing honeysuckle perfume, suggestions of green herbal essences, and pungent green tea supply inner-mouth allure, while a remarkable sense of stony underpinnings along with savory sweet-saline suggestions of lobster serve for intrigue and saliva-inducement. This might lack quite the textural allure of the corresponding Brücke, but finishes with sensational, interactive persistence, not to mention promises more to come." -Vinous

"The 2017 Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Auslese is noble and fine on the coolish and flinty, still refreshing and precise nose. Lush and round on the palate, this is an elegant, refined and rich, mineral and salty Auslese that includes only 25% of botrytis berries. The finish is salty, piquant and still rich, but the acidity is playful and perfectly interwoven with the texture. Not as quiet as the Spätlese right now but with drama, tension and a future. Tasted from the 375-milliliter bottle in July 2019."

"Honeyed apricots and lemon. Rich, mouth-filling sweetness and real purity of fruit and mouth-watering finish. So tangy and long but needs time."

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
