A genuine piece of Port history: Dow's 1966, a celebrated vintage, bottled in London by Grant's of Saint James. Dow's is the Symington house known for its distinctively drier finish, and that style ages beautifully. After roughly six decades, this is a mature, back-vintage bottle that has shed its youthful tannins and settled into something soft, complex and savory. Stand it upright for a day, then decant carefully off the heavy sediment that old Vintage Port throws. Pour modest glasses and let it open in the glass; bottles this old vary, so meet it where it is.

"Dow’s 1966 Vintage Port is a gorgeous example of the year, offering intense, deeply concentrated cherry liqueur, toffee, candied fig, maple syrup, datecake and membrillo qualities and a vibrant, spicy overtone. Silky and seamless in texture and finely detailed, it seduces with its balance and elegance rather than opulence and power, fully in keeping with the house style. Its intense sweetness is mitigated by its sharp delineation and energy. I have no doubt that it will outlive 1962-vintage people like me. Its a wonderfully flexible Port to serve with all sorts of not-too-sweet, savory desserts and, especially, mild cow’s milk blue cheeses." —Josh Raynolds

"This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977.The 1966 is a top success for that vintage; in fact, it would be hard to find a better port from that year." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Dow's

Since 1798, Dow's has been shipping Port from the Douro Valley—first as a Portuguese merchant importing wine, then as a producer with deep roots. Bruno da Silva's vision evolved into Silva & Cosens and eventually the Dow brand in the 1890s. Five generations of Symington family winemakers have built a reputation on Vintage Ports of real complexity and age-worthiness. Portuguese tradition in a bottle, consistently among the finest.
