Roughly 220 cases a year of cool-climate Syrah from a single block in Martinborough — this is one of New Zealand's genuinely scarce reds, and one of its most Northern-Rhône-minded. Every drop of Dry River's Syrah comes from Lovat, planted in 1992, the estate's warmest site: big rocks left by an ancient river terrace, seasonal winds, and an unusually low 33 metres above sea level, which the McCallums credit for the wine's amplified fruit. The vines are believed to be the ancient Serrine clone, which matters more for Syrah than for almost any other red grape, and the fruit hangs until the very end of the season — sometimes into May — for slow ripening and acid rather than sheer sugar. The house is chasing elegance and perfume here, not power, so expect violets and black pepper ahead of jam. Dry River was one of Martinborough's first wineries when Neil and Dawn McCallum founded it in 1979, and the Syrah has its own quiet piece of that history: the first vintage, in 1996, was labelled 'Arapoff' after the vineyard it came from, which the estate later bought and renamed Lovat. A rare one.

"Already throwing out considerable sediment, the 2016 Lovat Vineyard Syrah became a vibrant purple hue in the glass. Violets and cracked pepper make for an enticing nose, and that's backed by blueberries and blackberries on the palate. It's medium-bodied but intense, with just-ripe tannins and bright acids that give the wine a precise, elegant feel and lengthy finish. One of two great Syrahs from Martinborough (the other being Kusuda's), it should drink well for a decade or more." —Joe Czerwinski

"There’s something about Martinborough Syrah... when it’s good it can contend with Hawke’s Bay – and the world. This wine is truly delicious: inky, dark and wonderfully aromatic, with the pepper and herb mix close in style to Hawke’s Bay, along with a plush, juicy, black and blue fruit palate with wonderful freshness and length. This comes from one of Martinborough's most renowned vineyards, over the road from Ata Rangi."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck with black pepper sauce, lamb shoulder with olives and thyme, grilled venison, mushroom and thyme tart, or a rare ribeye with a peppercorn crust.

Tasting Profile

Aromas of violets, black pepper and cinnamon spice over dark berry fruit. Medium-bodied and aromatic rather than heavy, with a firm acid backbone, fine tannins and a long, spicy, savory finish.
