Grand Cru red Burgundy from one of the great modern vintages, now sixteen years old and drinking in its stride. Bressandes is generally held to be the most elegant and finely structured of the red climats on the hill of Corton, an east-facing band of limestone-rich soil, and Edmond Cornu & Fils farms about half a hectare of it. The domaine is based in Ladoix-Serrigny, one of the Côte de Beaune's least fashionable villages, and Pierre Cornu has run it in a fully classical style for more than three decades — very little has changed in the vines or the cellar. 2010 gave a small crop of tiny berries and wines of remarkable balance: cool-toned fruit, fine tannins and the kind of acidity that carries a Burgundy for two decades. This bottle reaches us from a private cellar rather than the domaine. Decant it and give it air before pouring.

"This is unusually exuberant for a young Corton with an elegant and pure mix of ripe red berries, minerals and a hint of iron-infused soil. There is excellent intensity to the beautifully well-balanced middle weight plus flavors that also exude a fine minerality on the powerful but graceful finish. Bressandes is always the class of Cornu's cellar and 2010 will not be an exception to that pattern. A classy Corton."
