Ginestra Casa Mate is one of the benchmark Barolos of Monforte d'Alba, and this 2004 from a classic, structured vintage has had two decades to come into its own. Elio Grasso farms south-facing vines on clay-limestone soils at 300 to 350 meters, fermenting in stainless steel and aging in large Slavonian oak casks, the traditional Piedmont approach that prizes Nebbiolo's transparency over oak influence. The 2004 vintage produced age-worthy, structured Barolos, and this bottle is now in a mature, beautifully developed window. From a private collection, for lovers of classic, terroir-driven Nebbiolo at full maturity.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2004 Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate is a decidedly more masculine Barolo than the Gavarini. Made in a rich, weighty style, it reveals layers of deeply spiced, mentholated dark fruit, new leather and licorice sensations in an expression of Nebbiolo that engages all of the senses. It is a superb effort from one of Piedmont's unheralded producers. The soils in this parcel contain 70% clay and 30% sand." —Antonio Galloni

"Light ruby. Real intensity and excitement. Roses and richness but not too sweet or dusty. Lots of great lift and intensity. Exciting. Spreads across the palate. Quite dry finish."

Wine Spectator

91 points

"Pretty aromas of plum, cedar and fresh flowers follow through to a full body, with fine tannins and a long, fresh finish. Delicate, yet structured and racy."

More about Elio Grasso

Elio Grasso worked in a Turin bank before his winemaking grandfather's death pulled him back to his roots in Monforte d'Alba. Since 1978, he's tended 44 acres of vineyards with meticulous care, producing just 90,000 bottles a year of single-vineyard Barolo cuvées that speak directly to the character of their terroir. His son Gianluca carries the work forward now.
