A benchmark single-cru Barolo from one of Monforte d'Alba's quietest perfectionists. Elio Grasso's Gavarini Chiniera bottling comes from the Chiniera block within the Gavarini MGA, planted on sandy, limestone-based soils above the family's farmhouse cellar. Gianluca Grasso leads today, working in a classical Monforte mold: long Slavonian-cask aging, no shortcuts, no makeup. The 2013 vintage was a structured classical year, and at twelve years out the wine is just stepping into its window. Expect perfumed Nebbiolo elegance over a serious tannic frame, with the kind of savory complexity that justifies the cellar time. A Barolo for the long game.

"The 2013 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is much showier than the Ginestra Casa Matè. An ample, resonant Barolo, the Gavarini Chiniera exudes richness from the get-go. Macerated cherry, kirsch, wild flowers and mint are some of the many notes that are laced together. Ripe, silky tannins add to the wine's considerable raciness. I am somewhat surprised by how well this gorgeous wine is showing today." —Antonio Galloni

"The 2013 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera stands apart in this tasting of Elio Grasso's new releases. The fruit portrayed shows a very crisp and focused quality. It absolutely pops from the glass with brilliant sharpness. Gianluca Grasso tells me lab reports confirm the higher acidic tenor of the wine, although this is not necessarily perceived acidity that you taste. Aromas of wild berry, balsam herb, licorice and smoke emerge delicately from the bouquet. The wine's mouthfeel evokes a profound sense of elegance thanks to those noble tannins and its silky texture." —Monica Larner

More about Elio Grasso

Elio Grasso worked in a Turin bank before his winemaking grandfather's death pulled him back to his roots in Monforte d'Alba. Since 1978, he's tended 44 acres of vineyards with meticulous care, producing just 90,000 bottles a year of single-vineyard Barolo cuvées that speak directly to the character of their terroir. His son Gianluca carries the work forward now.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

The ultimate Sunday-roast Barolo. Try with brasato al Barolo, osso buco with gremolata, mushroom risotto, or aged Castelmagno. Truffle-shaved tajarin would be a Piedmont-on-Piedmont match made in heaven.

Tasting Profile

Medium-plus body, silky-tannined and finely perfumed. Wild cherry, kirsch, rose petal and dried herbs over licorice, balsam, tar and a chalky mineral undertow. Tannins are noble rather than rustic, acidity bright, the finish long and salivating.
