The Cogno Barolo to know if you don't know Cogno yet. Cascina Nuova is the entry to the family's lineup, drawn from the younger vines of their flagship MGA Ravera in Novello — and "entry" here just means earlier-drinking, not lesser. Valter Fissore (son-in-law of the late Elvio Cogno) farms Ravera as carefully as any cru in the Langhe; Cogno is the single largest grower in the MGA. The 2016 is the classic vintage of the modern era: a cool, wet spring delayed the season, a mild summer kept the fruit fresh, and one of the latest harvests in years gave Baroli with vivid acidity and refined, precise tannins. Aged 24 months in large Slavonian botti in the traditional Cogno style, this is pure Nebbiolo: violets, sour cherry, rose petal, fine tannin, savory length. Ten years on it opens up generously with a decant, and the structure of the vintage will carry it comfortably for another decade.

"Cogno's 2016 Barolo Cascina Nuova is absolutely gorgeous. Pliant and expressive on the palate, the 2016 has a touch more mid-palate sweetness and texture than in the past, when the wine has been more nervous in feel. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, wild flowers, cedar, sweet tobacco and anise all open up effortlessly. Silky tannins add to its considerable immediacy and appeal. This is such a pretty wine in its peer group and also a terrific example of how attractive more modestly priced Barolos are in 2016." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"Of the four Elvio Cogno Baroli out on the market now, this wine is the most immediate and accessible of the bunch. Production is an ample 20,000 bottles. The 2016 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a terrific wine with impeccable balance. The bouquet offers dark fruit aromas, licorice, smoke, tar and spice. These aromatic pieces slide together with precision to create an intriguing and multifaceted puzzle. It shows good fruit weight and concentration, reinforced by firm tannins, freshness and a silky mouthfeel. This is a terrific go-to Barolo from a classic vintage. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and then ages for two years in botte grande made with Slavonian oak." —Monica Larner

"The Novello township has gained renown largely thanks to the Elvio Cogno estate which counts 11.5 of its 15 hectares in the cru of Ravera. Cascina Nuova is the most accessible of the property’s four Baroli, assembling fruit from a 1.5ha site of young plantings. The nose radiates prettiness: strawberry and raspberry underpin dewy rose, lilac and anise. Plump, succulent fruit remains buoyant and is gracefully buttressed by fine yet persistent structure. Zesty orange flavours refresh the finish."

"An elegant style, displaying cherry, licorice, menthol and tar aromas and flavors, this is harmonious and very approachable now, yet there is sufficient structure for this red to age well too. Fine length."

"Rose, woodland berry and baking spice shape the nose along with crushed mint notes on this fragrant red. The savory, polished palate boasts succulent raspberry, ripe strawberry and white pepper before taut tannins and bright acidity reveal a firm, elegant structure. Star anise lingers on the finish. Drink 2023 –2036." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Elvio Cogno

We have been excited about Cogno's wines for many years. With the most recent of vintages, Elvio Cogno has reached the pinnacle of greatness. The domaine can now join a small handful of producers in Barolo that we can truly call elite.

This was inevitable. Cogno was founded by Elvio Cogno in 1990 after he left Marcarini, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest wine-makers in Piedmont. Since then, he (together with his daughter Nadia and her husband, Valter Fissore) has been making very traditional-style Barolos in the village of Novello, and especially its top Cru, Ravera.
