No wine has more range than great Chianti Classico, and Felsina's are supreme examples, terroir-driven yet utterly drinkable. Rancia is the estate's celebrated single-vineyard Riserva, from an amphitheater-shaped site in Castelnuovo Berardenga whose limestone-and-slate soils give menthol and spice for lift over a core of leather, tobacco, and minerality. Bottlings like this can age 20 years and beyond. This back-vintage 2006, from a well-regarded Tuscan year, is now fully mature and showing the savory, tertiary complexity that makes old Sangiovese so compelling. "The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is another of the truly great wines in this tasting. It is most similar in style to the 2001 for its power, but also has some of the aromatic finesse and complexity of the 2004. Layers of fruit build to the explosive, huge finish. Today the 2006 is big, implosive and tightly wound, but it will be absolutely gorgeous in another few years. Actually, it already is. Since its release a few years ago, the 2006 has continued to move towards a more refined expression of Sangiovese while maintaining all of the structure it showed as a young wine." —Antonio Galloni

Fèlsina was founded in 1966 when Domenico Poggiali acquired the estate during Tuscany's wine revolution. Nearly 600 hectares with ninety-five planted to vines, Felsina is best known for their sleek, aromatic Super Tuscan Fontallaro and the spicy, intense Rancia Riserva—wines that prove Sangiovese is anything but one-note.
