No wine has more range than great Chianti Classico, and Felsina's are supreme examples, terroir-driven yet utterly drinkable. Rancia is the estate's celebrated single-vineyard Riserva, from an amphitheater-shaped site in Castelnuovo Berardenga whose limestone-and-slate soils lend menthol and spice for lift over leather, tobacco, and minerality. These wines routinely age 20 years and beyond. This back-vintage 2007 is now mature, with the savory, tertiary complexity that rewards patience with old Sangiovese. "The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is another dazzling wine. This is a vintage of overt, sumptuous fruit and pure sexiness. Despite its richness, the 2007 never loses its sense of structure, but in this vintage the tannins are nearly buried by the huge fruit. Today the 2007 comes across as a hypothetical blend of the 2004 and 2006, with the finesse of the former and the size of the latter. Not a bad combination, to put it mildly. Fèlsina was founded in 1966 when Domenico Poggiali acquired the estate during Tuscany's wine revolution. Nearly 600 hectares with ninety-five planted to vines, Felsina is best known for their sleek, aromatic Super Tuscan Fontallaro and the spicy, intense Rancia Riserva—wines that prove Sangiovese is anything but one-note.
