Pelaverga is grown almost nowhere but Verduno, and for generations it was drunk almost nowhere else either — the village's own house red, now one of Piedmont's great open secrets. The Alessandrias have been making it since anyone can remember and call theirs "Speziale," a nod to the gentle spice the grape is known for; local lore has it as an aphrodisiac, which tells you something about how Verduno feels about it. It is organically farmed and vinified for lift rather than weight, so it comes out light on its feet, peppery and savory-spiced. Chill it down and it does everything a summer red should, and everything a Thanksgiving red should too. Drink it young.

"Very light in appearance, the Fratelli Alessandria 2025 Verduno Pelaverga Speziale moves forward with pretty and pronounced aromas of pink peppercorn, tuberose, mountain violet and wild raspberry. Named "Speziale" as a tribute to the spicy elegance that defines the wines of Verduno, this expression is fermented in stainless steel and aged briefly in stainless steel and/or cement to preserve the grape's vibrant aromatics. The palate is decidedly light-bodied and delicate, but there is just enough freshness and energy to carry those playful flavors through the finish, making it an ideal choice for summer drinking. Its featherweight structure is very much part of the wine's charm. A total of 28,000 bottles were produced." —Monica Larner
