A Nebbiolo unlike any other in the Langhe. Clare J.C. - 'Claré' for the bright red Chiaretto style, with 'J' for Thomas Jefferson (who tasted lightly sparkling Nebbiolo in Piemonte in 1787) and 'C' for Gian Battista Croce, the jeweler to the House of Savoia whose 1606 winemaking writings inspired the cuvée - is G.D. Vajra's homage to the lost, lighter style of Nebbiolo. Vajra farms organically on the highest slopes of Barolo, in the hamlet of Vergne, and that altitude shows here: the wine is bottled young, with a whisper of natural carbonation, an off-dry finish, and the kind of crunchy red-fruit energy you almost never associate with the grape. It drinks closer to a juicy alpine red than a structured Barolo - and that's the entire point. A piece of Piemontese history, served slightly chilled.

G.D. Vajra traces back to 1968, when Aldo Vajra inherited his grandparents' farm in Vergne, the highest village in Barolo. He was a pioneer of organic viticulture in Piedmont—certified in 1971, decades before it became fashionable. His Langhe Nebbiolo showcases the grape at its most approachable, fermented naturally, aged in neutral oak.

Tasting Profile
