A Bourgogne Rouge from vines a few strides outside the Chambolle-Musigny boundary, made by one of the village's reference addresses with exactly the same care as her premier crus. Les Bons Batons sits at the border of Chambolle and Gilly-les-Citeaux, just across the main road from the village proper, and it goes through the domaine's standard routine: partial destemming, native-yeast fermentation, a short cool maceration and around twenty months in barrel with restrained new oak. Ghislaine Barthod farms 5.86 hectares, bottles eleven separate Chambolle premier crus and owns no grand cru at all, and her husband Louis Boillot works the vines; that parcel-by-parcel discipline runs all the way down to this bottle, which has fooled more than one experienced taster into guessing further up the ladder. 2023 gave a very generous Pinot crop that demanded severe green harvesting, then a September heat spike that sent everyone picking in a hurry, and the reds came out perfumed, fresh and more concentrated than anyone expected. Open it now with a short decant; it will hold five or six years.
