Cascina Francia is the vineyard that made Giacomo Conterno's modern reputation — the Serralunga d'Alba site Giovanni Conterno bought in 1974, and the source of every bottle of Conterno Barolo since. This is the 1998, now well past twenty-five years old and deep into the tertiary register that traditional Serralunga Nebbiolo does better than almost anything: tar, dried rose, leather and truffle laid over a tannic frame that has finally softened without going slack. Conterno's method here is famously unhurried — long macerations, years in large Slavonian oak casks, nothing rushed and nothing added. A bottle for a serious table and a long evening. Note: the labels are damaged and peeling, purely cosmetic wear on a bottle of this age; the wine inside is untouched.

"The 1998 Barolo Cascina Francia from Giacomo Conterno is delicate, layered and perfumed, showing gorgeous finesse and lovely inner tension in its fruit. Overall this is a soft, accessible Cascina Francia that is drinking beautifully today and should last for at least another decade. Both bottles I tasted from the property were truly sublime but I should point out that I, and others, have had decidedly different experiences with bottles purchased in the US, which have often come across as decidedly more austere for reasons that admittedly remain somewhat of a mystery. For those who are curious, I didn't included a note on the 1998 Monfortino as it doesn't take a rocket scientist to conclude that the wine is much too young to deliver any real pleasure at this stage, no matter how thrilling the wine might be to taste!" —Antonio Galloni

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Piedmontese classics first: brasato al Barolo, braised beef short ribs, agnolotti in butter and sage, mushroom or truffle risotto. Roast game birds and rich, slow-cooked meats work equally well. For cheese, go for aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Decant and give it time in the glass.

Tasting Profile

A fully mature Barolo from a top site. Expect the tertiary range of well-aged Nebbiolo—dried cherry, rose, tar, leather, dried herbs and forest floor—rather than primary fruit. Full-bodied but not heavy, with high acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins that have softened with time, and a long, savory finish.
