Monfortino is the summit of traditional Italian wine, Giacomo Conterno's Barolo Riserva, made only in the best years from the estate's finest Nebbiolo and aged for roughly six to eight years in large oak casks before release. For many it's the single most perfect expression of the grape. This 1993 is a deep back-vintage from a private collection, now well over three decades old and fully mature. At this point Monfortino is all tertiary grandeur, the kind of haunting, savory, ethereal Nebbiolo that only great old Barolo delivers; decant with care and serve soon. A genuine collector's bottle and a rare chance to drink Conterno's masterpiece at full age.

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.
