A 1.5L museum piece of arguably the most coveted Barolo label in the world, in a format and from an era almost impossible to find. The 1970 Monfortino is the last Conterno Monfortino made from purchased fruit (the family bought their Cascina Francia estate in 1974), and the wine was famously not bottled until 1985 after 15 years in 50hl Slavonian botti. 1970 was a classical structured Piedmont vintage, and 55 years on this magnum is squarely in legend territory. From Roberto Conterno's grandfather Giovanni's era of sourcing the very best Serralunga fruit. A bottle for a once-in-a-lifetime table.

"The 1970 Barolo Riserva Monfortino was the last Monfortino Giovanni Conterno bottled in magnum until 1982, when he knew he could ensure consistency by bottling magnums on the line as opposed to by hand, so the 1970 is the only Monfortino of the decade available in magnum. Available theoretically, if you can find it. I once had two, this is the last one. What a wine. Timeless and eternal in the glass, the 1970 is mesmerizing from the moment it is served. Like all of the older wines in this tasting, it is at once mature and yet full of life. The tannins have largely melted away, and yet at fifty years of age, the 1970 possesses tremendous fruit depth and a huge finish. This magnum is perhaps just a tiny bit less thrilling than the best examples I have had, but only by a hair. What a wine!" —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The monolithic 1970 Barolo Monfortino exhibits plenty of amber in its dark garnet color in addition to earthy, dried fruit, smoke, and tobacco scents. Angular in the mouth, it is big, rich, and well-constituted." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.

White truffle risotto, brasato al Barolo, roast capon with chestnut stuffing, or simply a bowl of broth and tajarin to let the wine sing. A bottle for a once-in-a-lifetime celebration table.

Tasting Profile

Fully resolved 1970 Serralunga: dried rose, dried cherry, leather, forest floor, white truffle, balsamic herbs, dried orange and a deep tertiary sweetness. Tannins gone to silk; the magnum keeps the perfume regal and the finish endless.
