Monfortino — the most coveted Barolo on earth — in magnum, from a great classical vintage, twenty-six years on. There is nothing else to say, really, but here goes. Giovanni Conterno made the 1999, and it is widely considered among the very greatest Monfortinos ever produced. The fruit comes from Cascina Francia in Serralunga, the wine spent seven-plus years in 50hL Slavonian botti before bottling, and the 1.5L format will keep it on a slow, glacial evolution well past the next generation. This is the wine collectors build cellars around and the wine sommeliers whisper about. Library Conterno of this stature, in this format, in this vintage — it does not get more serious. Drink it with the people you love most.

Antonio Galloni

99 points

"The 1999 Barolo Riserva Monfortino emerges from a vintage that was not well understood on release. It’s a powerful Barolo that continues the line of austere vintages like the 1996 before it. Rich and explosive on the palate, the 1999 offers a captivating mix of intense red fruit and complicating hints of dried herbs, flowers, iron and mint. It’s one of my favorite Monfortinos, and a great wine for the cellar." —Antonio Galloni

More about Giacomo Conterno

The Piedmont legend. Giovanni Conterno opened a tavern in 1908, made Barolo for it, and the first Riserva changed everything. His son Giacomo took over in 1934, and the estate's been making world-class Nebbiolo ever since. Monfortino Riserva is aged seven years minimum in huge botti—old school done perfectly.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

An occasion bottle. Stand-rib roast, brasato in Monfortino, tartufo bianco over hand-cut tajarin, or aged Castelmagno. Decant patiently, pour generously, and put the phone away.

Tasting Profile

Profound and complete: black cherry liqueur, blood orange, tar, woodsmoke, dried roses, fresh herbs, a deep mineral base. Full-bodied, pure, perfectly balanced, with palate-staining tannins and an endless finish.
