Giuseppe Mascarello’s Monprivato 2010 is a reference-point Barolo—traditional, detailed, and profoundly expressive. From a single, historic vineyard in Castiglione Falletto that the Mascarello family has farmed for over a century, this wine represents the pinnacle of site-specific, old-school Nebbiolo craftsmanship.

The 2010 vintage is one of the most celebrated of the modern era: cool, long, and perfectly balanced. In Monprivato, it produced a wine of poise, precision, and immense aging potential. The bouquet is classic: rose petals, sour cherry, orange peel, and star anise, with deeper layers of cedar, iron, and forest floor emerging with air.

On the palate, it’s structured and lifted, with fine, chalky tannins and vibrant acidity that carries the wine through a long, mineral finish. Fermentation in concrete and aging in large Slavonian oak botti ensure that what’s in the glass is pure vineyard expression, nothing masked or manipulated.

Visiting Cantina Giuseppe Mascarello & Figli is in some ways a bit like traveling back in time: the winery is full of ancient, enormous botti, and though the largest casks are no longer in use, the family traditions still reign. Fermentations are slow, in concrete and steel; aging is long, in large oak botti ranging from 20 to 70 years of age. There are no tricks to doll the wines up. Farming decisions are made with an eye not only to the current vintage, but to future generations of Mascarellos. However visiting Mascarello isn’t just stepping into the past: a visit is being welcomed into a space where you can feel the profound connection between the present and what has come before, the thread that ties today’s Piedmont to its rich and wonderful history. Elena and her brother, Giuseppe, are the latest Mascarellos to carry the thread forward, and they're doing it beautifully, which shows in the wines. The family has some of Piedmont's greatest terroirs, including Monprivato (often called “the Musigny of Barolo”). They do what they need to do to allow those terroirs to shine year after year, in each new vintage’s unique voice.

"Mauro Mascarello does not disappoint with his stunning 2010 Barolo Monprivato. This is an impeccable expression from Castiglione Falletto that imparts an immense sense of purity and elegance. The bouquet opens slowly to reveal pressed flower, cola, dried ginger, forest fruit and balsam herb. This is a magnificent expression of Nebbiolo that changes and shifts each time you come back to contemplate its aromas. That magical fluidity is also present in the mouth. The wine presents silky tannins and crisp fruit flavors. Given the sheer quality on display now, you can count on Barolo Monprivato to continue a slow and successful evolution in your cellar. This is a true beauty."
