The debut vintage of Marta and Carlotta Rinaldi's bottling of Barolo Bussia, sourced from the legendary heart of Bussia Sottana's oldest vines, planted in the 1940s. This wine was the biggest news out of Barolo in recent years. Forest floor, balsamic camphor, ripe berry fruit, botanical herbs, licorice, and raspberry compote define the aromatic arc. Still very young with racy tension, the firm backbone of tannins and fresh acidity promise several decades of aging. Drink from 2029 onward.

"The 2019 Barolo Bussia, a new wine in this range, is fabulous. It is also a very serious, almost somber Barolo endowed with huge fruit and equally imposing tannins. Sage, mint, dried herbs, crushed leaves and spice lend compelling aromatic intensity to this deep, layered Barolo. Exotic hints of orange peel, spice and sweet dried cherry linger on the explosive, soaring finish. What I love most about the Bussia is its complexity. Each taste reveals a new shade of its glorious dimension as the 2019 builds into its seriously long, resonant finish. This is a tremendous debut from sisters Marta and Carlotta Rinaldi." —Antonio Galloni

"Rich, round and saturated with flavors of cherry, strawberry, plum and rose, this red is complex and tightly wound. Reveals iron, tar and eucalyptus notes as this firms up on the long aftertaste. From start to finish, this exudes an essence of fruit, with terrific harmony and length."

"Giuseppe Rinaldi’s debut vintage of 2019 Barolo Bussia is the biggest and best news out of Barolo in years. It’s absolutely fantastic, with aromas of forest floor, balsamic sensations of camphor and ripe berry fruit that segue into botanical herb, licorice and raspberry compote on the palate. Hailing from the storied heart of the cru, in the area once called Bussia Sottana, it boasts an age-worthy structure and a natural concentration thanks to the advanced age of the vines planted in the 1940s. It’s still very young with racy tension but already balanced, with a backbone of firm tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2029–2049." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

In a region obsessed with single-vineyard expressions, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains a traditionalist purist: he blends fruit from multiple Barolo sites to capture the soul of the appellation, not the plot. Fermented with natural yeasts in his father's ancient oak tini for a month, with no temperature control, then aged in old botti for three and a half years, his Barolos are powerful, hauntingly perfumed monuments to time-honored craft.
