Graham's Six Grapes is their flagship reserve Port, and this Special River Quintas Edition dials it up, drawing on fruit from the prized riverside vineyards of Quinta dos Malvedos and Quinta do Tua. Reserve Port spends only a few years in barrel, far less than Vintage Port, but this bottling is built to mimic vintage quality: rich, concentrated and structured. It's deep, dark and ready to drink now, no decades of cellaring required. A little sediment may form, so a quick decant doesn't hurt. Serve it at cool room temperature after dinner.

"Very saturated dark red. Youthful port aromas of cassis, licorice, chocolate, herbs and damp earth. Very intense, sweet flavors of chocolate and dark berries. Robust yet smooth and not obviously alcoholic. Superb fruit is given clarity by firm acids. Real wine-class port, with terrific structure, freshness and delineation of flavor." —Stephen Tanzer

"The NV Six Grapes Reserve Port (Special River Quintas Edition) is a blend of typical grapes aged up to two years in used wood. It was bottled in February 2017 with 117 grams per liter of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. This starts with dramatic color and then demonstrates the finesse to make you think you're drinking something much more sophisticated. The structure is excellent—it has moderate tannins, is tight on opening and responds a bit to warmth and aeration. In fact, it was one of the Reserves in this report that benefited from being retasted after 48 hours. It was just as solid and filled the mouth even then. The intensity of flavor and the color are both impressive as well. The structure is perhaps the biggest bragging point, but the rest does well, too. The mid-palate expanded with aeration. The aromatics are enticing, and the finish is special for a Ruby Reserva. Overall, this is a Ruby Reserva with more finesse, flavor and structure than most, but it also (almost) doubles the price of many. That will be up to you and your pocketbook, but it certainly delivers." —Mark Squires

"This is the latest in a series of special releases under the Six Grapes label. It comes from Graham's south-facing vineyards on the Douro north bank. The wine is of vintage Port quality—rich, but with some fine tannins. The jammy red fruits are lifted by acidity and by the fine perfumed character. Drink the wine now." —Roger Voss

Tasting Profile

Sweet and full bodied, with blackberry, cassis, plum, licorice and chocolate. A minty, eucalyptus lift and fresh acidity keep it lively; fine tannins and a long finish.
