A soaking winter shattered the 1995 crop down to two tons an acre, and then a steady ripening summer brought the fruit in fully mature by late September, making this the rounder, more generous sibling to the taut 1994. Bill Harlan bought these 240 acres in the western hills of Oakville in 1984 and planted on steep, east-facing slopes on the Mayacamas side of the valley, a site chosen for stress rather than ease; about 40 acres are under vine and the rest left as woodland. The wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Bordeaux blend filled out with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, destemmed and fermented in small open-top vats, then raised in new French oak. This bottle comes from a private cellar rather than from the winery. At thirty years old it is in its fully mature, secondary phase: decant it gently off the sediment, give it an hour, and drink it at the table.

Antonio Galloni

"Full saturated ruby. Knockout superripe nose of black plum, black raspberry, tobacco, minerals, brown spices and hot stones; distinct notes of torrefaction. Very dense and deep, with powerful backbone and great length on the palate. Like a great claret, the wine flavors go far beyond mere fruit. This is remarkably ripe for a California cab-based wine from this vintage, but has the spine for long development in bottle." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

"The 1995 Harlan Estate is almost as perfect as the 1994. It has gotten even better in the bottle, and remains one of the most remarkable young Cabernet Sauvignons I have tasted. The wine, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, was aged in 100% new oak, which adds subtle pain grille/toasty scents. This opaque purple-colored Cabernet offers up a nose of smoke, coffee beans, black and blue fruits, minerals, and roasted herbs. It is extremely full-bodied, with spectacular purity, exquisite equilibrium, and a seamless personality with everything in total harmony. The finish lasts for more than 40 seconds. This extravagantly rich, profoundly complex 1995 will give its 1994 sibling a run for its money. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2027." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

"Mushrooms, fresh tobacco and wet earth on the nose are transformed into purple blossoms and exotic spices with air. The spiced/savoury combination persists through the palate paired with brambly fruits on a warm day showing intensity and a lot of persistence. There is a presence of oak spice throughout that is more apparent than in younger vintages but also works for the wine. A mouth-watering wash of acidity keeps the palate refreshed while the tannin is persistent and palate-cleansing yet powder-fine."

"The 1995 Harlan Estate is a massive, luscious wine, laden with blackberry fruit, mocha and more evolved aromas of plums and cedar. This packs quite a textural punch, and while at 22 years of age it is remarkably fruit-forward it is by no means monolithic. While my preference is for what I sense are the more refined, detailed and savoury qualities of more recent vintages, there is no denying this wine's hedonistic appeal and monumental scale!"

Wine Spectator

"Tight, sturdy and slow to evolve, with firm, concentrated dried currant, sage, plum, tobacco and black cherry flavors, gaining depth and nuance while retaining a sense of elegance and finesse."
