What is this wine?
Heinrich Spindler is a highly regarded family estate in Forst, Pfalz, producing classically styled Rieslings from some of the region’s greatest vineyards. Pechstein is a celebrated Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) site with volcanic basalt soils that impart a distinctive smoky minerality. This 2023 Riesling Trocken reflects both the pedigree of the vineyard and the precision winemaking of the estate.

Why get this wine?
Pechstein is one of the Pfalz’s crown jewels, producing Rieslings of intensity, longevity, and unmistakable terroir character. Spindler’s wines remain excellent values compared to peers farming the same legendary site, making this bottling an insider’s choice for serious Riesling lovers. The 2023 vintage delivers vibrant freshness and clarity, ensuring both immediate pleasure and long-term cellaring potential.

What does this wine taste like?
Bright citrus, ripe peach, and orchard fruits framed by smoky, flinty minerality. Crisp acidity and precise structure carry the wine through a long, saline finish. Powerful yet refined, with clear volcanic character.

When should you drink this wine?
Drink now for vivid fruit and energy, or cellar 10–15 years to reveal deeper complexity and savory notes. A superb match for shellfish, white fish with herbs, or roasted poultry.

"The 2023 Riesling Forster Pechstein was made from more than 50-year-old vines rooted in basalt and sandstone debris and was made in stainless steel. The nose is smoky but redolent, and it has juicy white peach with a lovely tang of passionfruit. The palate is taut, zesty, smooth and tingling, with an inner saltiness that makes the mouth water. Pink grapefruit peel adds an aromatic frisson, while the dense, creamy, yet linear palate smoothes every nuance in its delicious fold. The 2023 is a beauty and a picture of creamy elegance." —Anne Krebiehl MW

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
