Morey-Saint-Denis is where this domaine's soul lives, and La Riotte is one of its most charming premier crus — a gentle slope of clay-limestone and small stones sitting just below Clos Saint-Denis, worked from vines planted in 1959. Laurent Lignier keeps adding parcels up and down the Côte d'Or, but the home village still sets the style: floral, high-toned aromatics built on old-vine depth rather than muscle, with restrained use of new oak. The vines have long been farmed biodynamically, with certification arriving in 2019. 2014 was a cool, classic red Burgundy vintage, balanced and fresh rather than powerful, and at twelve years the wine has shed its puppy fat and landed somewhere genuinely lovely. Drink it now and over the next several years; an hour in a decanter helps.

"Here the relatively elegant and expressive nose consists of a pretty array of various red berries, rose petal, violet, earth and once again a hint of sandalwood. The medium weight flavors are also more refined with good detail and verve that are appealingly harmonious though notably less powerful and complex."

Antonio Galloni

"Medium red. Smoky brown spices, wild herbs, wild raspberry on the classic Morey-Saint-Denis nose. Shows a suave texture on entry, with an enticing balance of wild red fruits, spices, dried flowers and earth underscored by sound acidity. Firmly tannic but not a powerhouse. Showing no easy sweetness today but this wine may well drink early. Dark berries and violet on the aftertaste." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

"The 2014 Morey St Denis 1er Cru la Riotte has a very expressive, mineral-driven bouquet with just a dash of black pepper coming through with aeration. The palate is lively on the entry with grippy tannin, tightly wound red berry fruit with a structured, quite masculine, stony-faced finish that should lighten up once in bottle. Even then, one can see how it gains vigor in the glass and attains wonderful focus." —Neal Martin

More about Hubert Lignier

Laurent Lignier runs this Morey-Saint-Denis legend—vines planted in 1880, now farmed organic and biodynamic with a light touch that matters. Twenty-four bottlings from nine hectares, including four Grand Crus (Clos de la Roche, Charmes-Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin). No fining, no filtration, just open-top cement tanks and natural yeasts doing what they've always done.
