Clos de la Roche is one of the crown jewels of Morey-Saint-Denis, and Lignier’s “MCMLV” bottling takes it a step further—crafted exclusively from vines planted in 1955, still on their original rootstock. These deep-rooted, low-yielding vines deliver a wine that’s not just powerful, but hauntingly detailed.

The 2019 vintage is a study in controlled intensity: dark cherry, plum, rose petal, and crushed spice float above a core of firm, fine tannins and deep, stony minerality. There’s both richness and restraint here—no excess, just Grand Cru gravitas expressed through fruit, soil, and time.

This is a wine for the ages. Decant gently if drinking now (ideally with something like duck breast or wild mushroom risotto), or cellar for 15–25+ years to watch it unfold. One of the truly great expressions of Pinot Noir anywhere in the world.

"The 2019 Clos de La Roche Grand Cru comes from the plot of vines planted by massale selection in 1955 that tends to produce tiny millerandé berries. Cropped at 18hl/ha it has a sublime bouquet with wonderful delineation, perhaps more floral than the regular cuvée, extremely well focused. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, an unerring sense of symmetry with a very harmonious, satin-textured finish that is so caressing. Interestingly, this comes in at 13.6° alcohol whilst the regular cuvée is 14.2°. This is a stunning snow-capped peak of the 2019 vintage." —Neal Martin

"The 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée MCMLV is a striking young wine in the making, unwinding in the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums, black truffle, smoked meats, loamy soil, peonies and caramelized orange rind. Full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's deep and serious, with ample reserves of fine, powdery tannins and a lively girdle of acidity. Long and penetrating, this cuvée derives from very old vines in Monts Luisants." —William Kelley

More about Hubert Lignier

Laurent Lignier runs this Morey-Saint-Denis legend—vines planted in 1880, now farmed organic and biodynamic with a light touch that matters. Twenty-four bottlings from nine hectares, including four Grand Crus (Clos de la Roche, Charmes-Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin). No fining, no filtration, just open-top cement tanks and natural yeasts doing what they've always done.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

For the first time in 2017, Laurent Lignier produced a separate cuvée of Clos de la Roche in honor of his grandfather Henri. The Clos de la Roche “MCMLV” comes entirely from Henri’s first planting in 1955: 27 rows of Pinot Noir in the Monts Luisants climat, which he used to propagate the rest of his holdings during the 1960s. This original parcel is highly susceptible to millerandage, which results in small berries of immense concentration, and Laurent harnessed the full power and intensity of such fruit in this stupendous bottling—of which he produced a mere two barrels. A wine such as this embodies Burgundy’s most profound essence: the continuous spirit and presence of a family whose members’ very hands have worked these same vines, this same parcel, since the vines were planted. How could Henri Lignier, when he was breaking earth in 1955, have ever imagined the course his home region would take over the ensuing decades, or the global acclaim that would be heaped on his son’s and his grandsons’ wines? Yet, despite the incredible changes those ensuing 65 years have witnessed, a Lignier has steadfastly worked each vine among these 27 rows of Clos de la Roche, vintage after vintage, gradually building its reputation as one of red Burgundy’s pinnacles. “MCMLV” is not just a great wine, then; it is an emblem of all that makes Burgundy special.
