Pistus means "pounded," a nod to the rough-and-ready wine Etna's farmers once crushed for their own tables, and I Custodi keep that spirit intact. This is the everyday Etna red in the range: 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio from young alberello bush vines in Contrada Moganazzi, certified organic, on the volcano's northern slope at 650 meters. No oak at all — a year in stainless steel and nothing else — so the fruit stays juicy and the wild edge stays sharp. 2023 was a punishing year on Etna: rain through May and June set off downy mildew, hail landed before harvest, and production here came in at around half the previous vintage, so there is less of it than usual. It's still the most affordable wine the estate makes and still the best introduction to the mountain — pour it slightly chilled and it practically drinks itself.
